Why is it that so many men want to be tall? There is something appealing about height. Tall men are more likely to be popular and their chances of attracting women are higher. Studies have proven that most women are more attracted to taller men. Whether these facts lead to tall men having greater self esteem or their self esteem leads to all the benefits listed above makes little difference. The fact is that life can be much better if your are taller.

If things are better for those of us who are taller, what does it mean for shorter men. There is a type of bigotry that exists in our society where shorter men are not treated with as much respect, this is called Heightism.

What is Heightism?

This is a basic type of discrimination that involves judging a person because of their height. Usually regarding men, heightism occurs when a taller man is given preferential treatment over a smaller man. It can also refer to a shorter man being unfairly treated in any way due to his height. This type of bigotry happens more often than people like to admit. It is much harder to prove and most of us are not even aware that it is happening. Though it may not be obvious, it is a very serious problem that many men have to suffer on a daily basis.

What Determines Your Height?

There are many factors that can determine your height. Some of these can be controlled and others must simply be accepted. There are a few steps that can be taken to help increase the chances that you reach your maximum height. Understanding what determines your height is the best way to learn what you can do to effect it.

  • Genetics – Genetics play the biggest part in deciding how tall you will be. If you were born with the genes of a shorter person, there is only so much you can do to increase your height.
  • Healthy Living – The way you choose to live your life can play a fairly large role in your overall health and even how tall you will be. Avoiding drugs, smoking and drinking will allow your body to reach it’s full potential. Remember, most men continue to grow until the age of 26.
  • Eating Habits – Proper nutrition is key to growing as tall as possible. If you do not provide your body with the vitamins and minerals it needs to thrive, it will not have the building blocks needed to reach it’s full height. Protein and calcium intake are two very important factors to consider if you are looking to grow as tall as you can.
  • Regular Sleep – During sleep, your body does most of its repair work and growth. This is one of the reasons why we need so much more sleep when we are going through puberty. Not getting enough sleep or not sleeping soundly can be very detrimental to our bodies, as well as, our overall health. If your body does not have the sufficient time to grow, chances are it will not.
  • Exercise – Exercising approximately 30 minutes a day, especially during adolescence, can play a part in how tall you grow. Regular exercise will not only make you healthier and happier but it can boost certain hormones that are responsible for growth. A good exercise routine will also help ensure that you get a good night’s rest.

When Do We Stop Growing?

Most males reach their maximum height around the age of 26. There have been studies that show that an adult males’ brains and bodies are still changing, albeit more slowly, long into their 20s.
