Memories and our minds are such wonderful, rich blessings. Yet, we only seem to realize just how lucky we are to have our minds if we start to lose them, or see the suffering of those we love losing them.

In the case of Alzheimer’s and many other associated memory disorders, it’s only been a recent discovery that a comprehensive combination of therapies could have a dramatic effect on the reduction of memory issues. Extensive preclinical studies from numerous laboratories have identified single pathogenetic targets for potential intervention and recently Dr. Breseden, from the University of California believes that a combination of various approaches will help to heal Alzheimer’s and even reverse it.

When our brain is working normally we can establish connections between thing, however in Alzheimer’s disease, the balance of these opposing signs gets unsettle and nerve connections are suppressed. This is where memories are lost.

Implementing a model of multiple targets as opposed to the current drug, which occupy only a single target, may be the key to reducing the complex disease, known as Alzheimer’s disease. Breseden uses the analogy “Imagine having a roof with 36 holes in it, and your drug patched one hole very well — the drug may have worked, a single “hole” may have been fixed, but you still have 35 other leaks, and so the underlying process may not be affected much.”

Bredesen’s new and more complicated approach is personalized to each patient. It requires extensive testing to determine what is affecting the plasticity signaling network of the brain, and responding to this with a targeted multi approach plan. Within that plan, the following components are vital:

Eliminating all simple carbohydrates

The diet needs to reduce these damaging foods from the body. Consuming too much simple startch means the brain can overload and begin glucose production with too much rapidity; ultimately causing a burnout.

Eliminating gluten and processed food

Gluten is fast becoming the enemy due to its energy zapping, and the free radicals in processed foods are one of the worst enemies to our brains. By clearing these offending and dangerous items from the patients’ diets, Beresen saw an improvement in most patients. Learn more about gluten-free diet and its benefits here.

Consuming coconut oil

Similar in structure to complex carbs, our brains manufacture insulin and convert it to glucose in your bloodstream. With Alzheimer’s, patients suffer because bits of the brain are starved of the necessary insulin; leading to impaired functionality and eventual loss of memory, speech, movement and personality. Coconut oil contains vital replacements for this and has been scientifically studied to produce enhanced memory retention.

Using yoga/ meditation

Because yoga is such a powerful de-stressor and mind de-clutterer, it can be very beneficial way of exercising for Alzheimer’s patients. Since the focus helps to consider mindfulness it also allows the mind to focus, which recharges it and helps synapses to re-establish connections.

Take melatonin

Beresen found that sunshine naturally boosted many people’s capability for memory retention. As we age, we begin to absorb it less, which can result in the onset of Alzheimer’s. In lieu of this, taking melatonin supplements had the same kind of impact on the brain. As well as melatonin being a neuro protector, it can scavenge and defends against harmful free radicals.

Sleep more

In almost all cases, people needed to sleep more. As we age, our neuroreceptors take longer to recharge. However, people’s body clocks often insist on an early rise. The inclusion of yoga and exercise can dramatically increase the amount of sleep patients get, which restores and recharges the brain.

Exercise

Touched upon above, exercise releases endorphins which make patients feel good. A happy mind is a healthier one. Also, exercise encourages sufferers to maintain a healthy weight and causes justifiable tiredness; promoting additional sleep.

Essentially, these days, things are looking much brighter for the future of Alzheimer’s and related cognitive diseases. Through combining different strategies as tested by Doctor Beresen, people can help to win the fight against degeneration of the brain.
