To help understand how best to combat the condition, you first need to know how it is caused in the first place. It is widely believed that acnes is caused by poor air quality conditions, resulting in clogged pores. Certain lifestyle choices such as air quality can contribute to acne, the main cause is the androgenic hormone, which increases the testosterone in the body. People who are sensitive to this, or eat a poor diet may discover an outbreak.

In many ways, acne is misunderstood. It’s part of your body’s natural defense mechanism to eliminate toxins from the body. Hence acne is so common among adolescents: their oil glands, along with hormonal changes, produce a chemical mix that results in an acne outbreak.

Excessive touching of the face, poor diet, oversleeping and androgenic hormones can all contribute to a bout of acne. Even what we wear can harbour space for bacteria to thrive. From baseball caps to sweat bands; bangles to beanies, covering skin can cause it to sweat and provides a breeding ground for bacteria.

Acne has several common cures, which help to kill of the bacteria that cause its spread. Different products containing the active ingredient Benzoyl Peroxide are often prescribed to soothe and rectify acne. However, this contains alcohol and can dry the skin or cause irritation.

Antibiotics are sometime prescribed to help treat the acne, but taking them regularly increases risk of building up a resistance to antibiotics; actually lowering your body’s tolerance to infection. They can attack the immune system and leave you feeling sluggish, having mood swings, or redness and burning of the skin.

Contraceptive pills are sometimes prescribed to women with acne because the unstable hormones can be the cause of the issue. Side effects of these can range from mood swings to weight gain and depression and anxiety issues, therefore they are not the best choice when it comes to trying to cure acne.

In severe cases of acne, doctors have prescribed the hormonal treatment Co-cyprindiol. This is designed to reduce the sebum produced in within the body. Part of a long waiting game, Co-cyprindiol can take up to six months to properly kick in and sort the acne out.

Co-cyprindiol carries some ominous side effects, such as the possibility of developing breast cancer in later life, bleeding and spotting between periods, which can sometimes occur for the first few months, and developing blood clots to name a few.

Some people use pore clearing products such as Isotretinoin, which has a number of beneficial effects form clearing pores to killing bacteria. The negatives can be costly, long lasting and worse yet: I’ve heard it!

The good news is there are several natural ways to control acne, which start with cleaning the face of make up before going to bed, removing items that cause sweat to become trapped, reducing the intake of oily foods, and eating more fruit and vegetables. Some people opt for a soothing aloe rinse to relax and soothe skin. Another great way to fight acne naturally is to use hot presses on the face; reducing the pain.
